James J. Peters VA Medical Center (JJP VAMC) is seeking an ACGME Spinal Cord Injury/Dysfunction (SCI/D) fellowship-trained physician for its Spinal Cord Injury Patient Care Center.


The James J Peters VA Medical Center is Clinical Referral Level 1 Facility. The SCI/D Service mission is to provide high quality, compassionate, and timely care to Veterans with spinal cord injury and disability (SCI/D). The population served includes both traumatic and non-traumatic SCI, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The SCI/D Service includes a 48 bed acute and sustaining Inpatient Unit, 10 Outpatient Clinics and a Home Care Program. The Inpatient Unit provides medical and rehabilitative services 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Eight beds are designated for patients with acute rehabilitation needs and 4 beds are designated for ventilator dependent SCI/D Veterans. The SCI/D Service is designated as a Regional Multiple Sclerosis Center and is a referral Center for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The acute SCI/D rehabilitation program is certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

The position involves the day-to-day medical care of persons with spinal cord injury and disorders (SCI/D) in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The incumbent will collaborate with a dedicated, multidisciplinary team. The incumbent is expected to supervise medical students, residents and fellows, as well as nurse practitioners. The JJP VAMC is affiliated with the most prestigious teaching institutions in the nation, including the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the Columbia Medical School and the Hospital for Special Surgery. Applicants should have excellent diagnostic and interpersonal skills, a commitment to team building and the overall aptitude for leadership, educational development and research. An academic appointment will be conferred in accordance with academic rank commensurate with quality and length of experience.

Work Schedule: Full-time.

The SCI/D Physician will participate in a rotating schedule providing on-call coverage, including weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board certified or board eligible in the area of medicine in which they were residency-trained prior to gaining eligibility to SCI board certification. Neurology certification is preferred, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation or Internal Medicine are acceptable.  (An academic appointment will be conferred in accordance with academic rank commensurate with quality and length of experience).
  • The ideal candidate is one with extensive and strong leadership experience, and demonstrated excellence in leadership in a complex academic medical center.

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Citizenship of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.)
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Academic achievements commensurate with faculty appointment as assistant professor or higher.
