A position exists for full-time Hematologist/Oncologist at the Edward J. Hines, Jr., VAMC located in Hines, IL. This section is a part of the VA Hospital, a level 1A facility with consults/referrals from VISN Medical Centers and outpatient clinics. The position entails possible academic appointment at Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine.

The Hematologist/Oncologist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to the patients serviced by the Hematology/Oncology Section. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of diseases along the spectrum of hematologic and oncologic disorders and possess the ability to provide care based upon physical, psycho/social, cultural, safety and other age-related factors as noted in the competencies described in the department and/or unit specific policies and procedures.

This provider must have successfully completed an accredited Hematology and/or Oncology Fellowship program and be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Hematology and/or Oncology.

Duties are multi-spectrum and include that of clinical and administrative management, education/teaching of residents and fellows, various section research activities and are as follows:

Initial evaluation of patients with Hematology/Oncology related disorders
Management/treatment of patients with Hematology/Oncology related disorders
Shared coverage of providing emergency care during off-tours
Fellow/Resident/Student supervision/education to include formal lectures and clinic and bedside teaching, oversight of trainee documentation in medical records, supervision of procedures, and supervision of patients on research studies
Establish and maintain professional relationships within Medicine Service, and with other services and facility management which result in improved patient care
Be an active participant in the research activities including opening clinical trials, completing research training and satisfying regulatory requirements for clinical trials to include supervision of patient care activities related to clinic trials
Other duties as assigned
Work Schedule: M-F 8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Physical requirements outlined below.

Preferred Experience: 1-3 years of experience

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.
