Northwestern Medical Group (NMG) and the Lurie Children’s Hospital (LCH) at Northwestern University seek a full-time, adult and pediatric cardiac procurement surgeon to be an integral part of the heart transplant team beginning in fall of 2022. The heart transplant program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital is among the largest in the Midwest. The Lurie Children’s is the largest pediatric heart transplant program in Illinois. Combined, the two programs perform over 60 heart transplants annually, and are ranked consistently in top Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery programs nationwide, according to US News & World Report. We offer the full spectrum of care to advanced heart failure patients and participate/lead many investigator-initiated and national sponsored clinical trials. The infrastructure dedicated to cardiothoracic surgery, transplant and mechanical circulatory support includes experienced, full-time advanced practice providers, a 6-year integrated residency, a 3-year traditional fellowship and 1-year advanced fellowship.

Primary responsibilities of the successful candidate:

  • Will be a key member of the care management team, responsible for the procurement of the heart
  • Will be on-call for heart procurements for both NMH and LCH programs
  • Will help evaluate, assess and procure donor hearts
  • Will travel by ground and/or air transport
  • Will provide clear communication with the recipient teams regarding donor heart evaluation/assessment, timing and coordination of donor and/or recipient procedures
  • Will collaborate and coordinate with thoracic and abdominal procurement teams
  • Will procure and transport donor heart via various organ preservation modalities, including cold-storage, Paragonix, and TransMedics OCS.
  • Will assist in recipient transplantation
  • Will teach and train cardiothoracic surgery residents and fellows
  • May assist in cardiac surgeries at NMH and LCH
  • May have active role in the ECMO program, which will involve in patient assessment, and cannulation on or off-site

Qualified candidates must have a strong background in clinical cardiothoracic surgery, have completed an ACGME accredited cardiothoracic surgery fellowship program or international equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have completed ACGME-accredited cardiothoracic surgery training or international equivalent
  • Must be ABTS certified/eligible or equivalent
  • Must have experience as PRIMARY surgeon for procurement
  • Minimum 10-15 heart procurements as primary surgeon, ideally over 50 over course of career
  • Experience with TransMedics OCS and Paragonix preferred
  • BC/BE by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery or thoracic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada

Employment will be with the Northwestern Medicine Group of cardiac surgeons led by Drs. Patrick McCarthy and Douglas Johnston. Preferred candidates will play a vital role in the growth and coordination of care and distinctive program development throughout the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute system, and will have significant opportunities for leadership development throughout the Northwestern Medicine.

Cardiothoracic surgeons in this position may participate in academic programs of the Feinberg School of Medicine, including educational programs (e.g., teaching service, training, preceptorship, mentoring, etc.) or research programs (e.g., participation in clinical trials, referring patients for clinical trials, etc.).  Salary is commensurate with experience.
