Job Description

Summary:

As a member of the Valley Humane Society's team, the Veterinary Technician plays an integral role in maintaining the health and well-being of animals served by the Phil Scholtz Veterinary Surgery Center. RVT responsibilities include, but are not limited to: leading high volume surgery days, medicating, vaccinating, and treating animals as prescribed by veterinarians, administering anesthesia and monitoring animals, assisting veterinarians in medical and surgical procedures, and controlled drug recordkeeping.

Location: Phil Scholz Veterinary Surgery Center, Pleasanton, CA

Reports to: Surgery Center Manager

Essential Duties and Functions:

Animal Care:

  • Efficiently lead high-volume surgery day focused on spay/neuter procedures.
  • Collect samples for testing and perform laboratory tests.
  • Medicate, vaccinate, and treat animals as prescribed by veterinarian.
  • Administer anesthesia and monitor animals under anesthesia.
  • Assure successful recovery of animals, post-surgery.
  • Assist veterinarians in medical and surgical procedures, including dentistry and soft tissue surgeries.
  • Use and maintain medical equipment.
  • Perform accurate data entry to update animal records and controlled drug logs.
  • Clean and maintain work areas.
  • Clean, sterilize, and prepare surgical instruments for surgery.
  • Handle and move animals before and after medical procedures.
  • Contribute to and lead initiatives to improve processes and procedures.
  • Oversee weekly medical supply inventory process and provide accurate counts as well as data.
  • Participate in other tasks as needed and assigned by the Manager.


Facility:

  • Assist in maintaining surgical equipment, instruments, and surgical suites.
  • Oversee drug inventory and daily cleanliness of surgical areas.
  • Adhere to local and state regulations.

  • Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals.
  • Provide quality customer service and be a positive representative of the organization.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Regular sitting at a computer station and operating electronic equipment.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing ladders.
  • Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in the kennel and facility area.
  • Understanding of cat and dog body language and ability to handle them effectively.
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals.
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation.
  • Consistent exposure to animals in the workplace and animal allergens.

  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with veterinary software systems.


Qualifications:

  • California Licensed Veterinary Technician or equivalent.
  • Experience in veterinary surgery, spay, and neuter, or shelter medicine is a plus.
