Veterinary Specialty Hospital San Marcos is looking for a Full Time Registered Veterinary Technician to join our new Ophthalmology department! This position is Tuesday through Friday, no weekends!

Summary: The ophthalmology technician will work closely with the ophthalmologist to assist in their surgical and medical treatment of eye problems. They will provide support and customized care of our ophtho patients in the exam rooms and/or if they are hospitalized. The primary responsibility of the ophtho technician will be to ophthalmology patients and will not have regularly scheduled duties in other areas of the hospital; however, should be utilized in other areas of the hospital as needed and when time allows.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with consults in the exam rooms
  • Take history, perform STT, evaluate PLR, conduct preliminary evaluation of anterior chamber and notify the doctor of any irregularities
  • Perform tonometry, fluorescein stain and dilate
  • Venipuncture; IV catheter placement; medication calculations and administration; digital radiography; patient prep and recovery; epidural administration; anesthesia monitoring for a variety of anesthetized ophthalmologic procedures
  • Record information in client/patient medical record during exam
  • Present treatment plans and explain procedures to clients as needed
  • Explain medications, discharge instructions and treatments with the owners to assure they understand the doctor's instructions
  • Become proficient in the use and care of specialized ophthalmic surgical equipment and microsurgical instruments
  • Assist and monitor recovery of post op patients

About You:
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in the veterinary field with anesthesia experience a must.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written; organizational skills; proactive thinking and a positive attitude are also a must.
  • Accuracy in calculating and delivering anesthetic agents, fluids, and CRIs.
  • Proficiency in record keeping related to medical procedures including daily treatments administered, patient status, procedures completed, supplies used, and anesthetic records.
  • Review and understanding of all medical records pertinent to patient care.
  • Comprehensive understanding and experience with anesthetic monitoring is required.
  • RVT HIGHLY PREFERRED and/or Highly skilled in anesthesia monitoring.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment and a commitment to developing long-term relationships with colleagues, clients, and community is required.
  • Maintain a positive outlook and ability to work well in stressful situations.
  • The ability to deliver exceptional client service is a priority.
