NEEDED: Operating Room/PACU (Holding) Registered Nurse

SCHEDULE: Operating Room/Holding - Day Shift is 7:00 - 3:30; 7:00AM - 5:30PM; 7:00AM - 7:30PM; 6:30AM - 3:00PM; 6:00AM - 2:30PM; late cases, weekends, and holidays

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • U.S. Citizen
  • The minimum requirement for all registered nurses shall include a current unrestricted registered nurse license from any state (United States)
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate accredited by the American Heart Association.
  • Education requirements: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or in related field
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or in related field is highly preferred.
  • Shall have at least three 2 years current experience in an operating room/recovery setting exclusive of agency assignments and must have worked within the last six (6) months

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • RNs are licensed professionals that deliver a broad range of nursing care in an operative care setting with cross training in recovery (Holding).
  • The Operating Room/PACU (Holding) RN will provide perioperative care for the adult and geriatric Veteran.
  • He/she will be expected to assist in all areas of the Operating Room/PACU (Recovery) for the following services: General, Vascular, Cardiac, Thoracic, Orthopedic, Neurologic, Ear. Nose, and Throat (ENT), Ophthalmic (EYE), Urologic (GU), Oral, Plastic and Podiatric.
  • Must have the technical and operational knowledge and clinical skills to function as the circulating and scrub nurse in all services, with the exception of scrubbing cardiac service which is a separate specialty.
  • Will be accountable for promoting patient safety, continuity/quality of care and general well - being of the Veteran patient while collaborating with physicians and ancillary services to provide this care.
  • Interviews patient/family appropriately reporting concerns and needs and/or systems issues during preoperative assessment.
  • Will be required to administer, document, and evaluate therapeutic interventions and regimens required of patients presenting for treatment, provide airway management, Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI), assist in placement and management of chest tube, maintain continuous and 12 lead electrocardiograph monitoring, cardioversion/defibrillation, maintain continuous intravenous vasoactive drug therapy and administration of intravenous drugs as approved, venipuncture and arterial puncture, temporary pacemaker management, interpret laboratory values, and administer IV moderate sedation.
  • Provides age specific care for adult and geriatric Veteran population.
  • Collaborates with physicians and ancillary services to determine desired postoperative outcomes; issues and institutes a plan of care to achieve outcomes.
  • Anticipates emergencies, coordinates prevention, and evaluates responses through critical analysis of patient situations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of technical skills to meet the needs of the specific patients, assisting and providing support during the most complex, involved surgical procedures.
  • Demonstrates practices that include adherence to infection control standards and the safe use and operation of equipment.
  • Communicates a through and detailed report of the patient including verifying correctness of all counts, medications on the sterile field, equipment, and implants in use/projected for use, to relief personnel.
  • Complete and accurate documentation of care on OR Record.
  • Assumes responsibility as service coordinator (or co-coordinator) for one of 12 specialty surgical services; duties include but not limited to maintaining instrument tray count sheets and physician preference cards, maintaining existing and ordering new instruments, equipment and supplies.
  • Must be able/willing to withstand long periods of continuous standing, walking, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing while working. Transferring objects and patients may be required.
  • May be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and maybe required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures and/or exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders requiring an individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
  • He/she follows procedures for the set - up, proper use, reprocessing and maintenance of reusable medical equipment (RME) based on manufacturer's instructions
  • Will utilize the nursing process to provide and coordinate the nursing care of the patient undergoing operative or other invasive procedures.
  • Assists with the set-up of surgical field and pre-surgery count of instruments, sponges, sharps, and miscellaneous items with scrub person.
  • Assist Anesthesia provider with induction.
  • Ensure proper patient positioning for surgical procedures.
  • Monitor sterile field, equipment, and traffic flow through the OR suite.
  • Prepares various specimens for pathology and microbiology per policy.
  • May be required to work with COVID 19 positive patients and Patients Under Investigation (PUI), for COVID 19
