Medical Director, Pain Management, Hospital for Special Surgery

The Director, Pain Management at HSS reports directly to the Anesthesiologist-in-Chief under the direction of the HSS Surgeon in Chief. The Director will work with HSS leadership and faculty to unleash the full potential of the Pain Management Division to promote HSS as the global leader in non-operative musculoskeletal care and pain management, research, teaching, and innovation.

The Director, Pain Management will drive the strategy for medical staff development, recruitment, and expansion, ensure the excellence of the Division’s clinical, educational, and research programs, and assume overall responsibility for operations and strategy across the Division. Critical to this role is the Division’s clinical integration and collaboration with HSS Orthopedic Service Lines. Additional roles and responsibilities of the Director are set out below:

Leadership and Organization:

  • Provide visionary and innovative leadership of the outpatient interventional Chronic Pain Management Division. Work closely and collaboratively with HSS leadership and faculty to build, grow, and integrate areas of clinical, educational, and research excellence, and enhance the Division’s national reputation in these areas. Create an overall recruitment strategy for the Division and direct the recruitment and onboarding of outstanding faculty and staff as needed. Proactively lead pain management expansion initiatives at HSS main campus and regional and national markets and actively advocate for the service's growth. Lead transformational change and show visionary leadership through consistently evaluating service efficacy and quality, implementing improvements to efficiency, and ensuring the highest levels of patient care. Promote a culture of safety, quality, inclusiveness, and an atmosphere of support and development for all. Ensure appropriate representation of the Pain Management Division at all levels of the Organization. Provide ongoing mentorship and development to faculty focused on research and academic advancement, leadership, and professional and clinical practice development. Coordinate a high-quality education program for the members of the service and ensure educational activities are provided to meet the requirements for of the ACGME-accredited Tri-Institutional Pain Medicine Fellowship.  Work closely with the Development Department to raise funds that support research, academics, the physical plant, and many other things important to the mission of the Division and HSS.

Clinical:

  • Support the organizational emphasis on managing the treatment of musculoskeletal disease by incorporating a non-operative and wellness approach to pain management clinical care and programs. Ensure the delivery of high quality, cutting-edge, efficient patient care in accordance with established guidelines; ensure sufficient access to such care. Spearhead the ongoing development of institutional and service-based best practices. Promote an atmosphere of clinical collaboration and integration with HSS surgeons, other physicians, and staff to optimize quality, patient outcomes and satisfaction. Provide input into quality and safety standards for patients and serve as a liaison to Hospital committees addressing pain management related patient care issues. Create, review, and revise institutional pain management policies and guidelines that are evidence-based and reflect state-of-the-art care.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • MD, licensed (or eligible for licensure) in New York State. Primary Board Certified and hold ACGME subspecialty certification in Pain Management. An outstanding clinician, prominent in societies with experience in editorial journal reviews and has a strong mentoring track record. Accomplished clinically and academically, experienced collaborating with other disciplines, and have the national reputation in pain management necessary to ensure the enhancement of the clinical, research and educational missions of the Division. Experienced and successful in managing a busy private outpatient interventional pain management practice.
