The Food Science and Nutrition Department in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is seeking candidates for a full-time, academic year (9-month) and summer session, Dietetic Internship Director / lecturer in Nutrition with a target start date in June 2021. The principal assignment of the successful candidate is to act as Dietetic Internship Director. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.  

The mission of our internship is to train dietetic interns who will be competent, well-rounded, culturally sensitive individuals and contributing members to the field of dietetics. Upon completing their dietetic internship, students will be qualified to enter clinical dietetics, food service management, community programs and to take the registration examination for their RD credential. For more information please visit: http://www.fsn.calpoly.edu/dietetic-internship. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the director of the dietetic program and additional responsibilities include teaching throughout the nutrition curriculum. The DI director will be expected to provide leadership to expand the DI program consistent with national development trends in dietetic internship education. The DI director will be expected to develop and implement strategies to grow the program including but not limited to online components and new preceptors identification and play a key role in the development of a Master Professional Studies in Nutrition (MPS). The DI Director coordinates all aspects of the dietetic internship, duties may include but are not limited to: managing all recruitment, selection and enrollment of the annual intern DI class, planning and coordinating orientation, scheduling and rotation of DI interns, evaluating interns for knowledge, competency, and professionalism, supervising all DI activities including classroom education, seminars and local and state Academy activities, and promoting and marketing the Cal Poly DI to internal and external stakeholders. The DI Director will be expected to coordinate and communicate with all DI participants. Duties may include but are not limited to: mentoring and developing preceptors and facility administrators, seeking new, on-going and potential sites by meeting with and preparing appropriate decision makers both on site and at Cal Poly, acting as a liaison to community and Academy leaders as well as ACEND personnel, interacting with local and state Academy groups in DEP Area 1 and Coastal Tri‑Counties, and planning scheduled Advisory Council meetings and other Council input. The DI Director will perform all administrative functions associated with the DI program duties that may include but are not limited to: assisting with contracts with sites, coordinating required legal issues between Cal Poly and outside entities, revising policies and procedures including the DI Internship handbook, website and preceptor manual, and performing periodic university and Academy site reviews as required for accreditation.  

The DI Director will be expected to teach as assigned throughout the nutrition curriculum which may include but is not limited to: nutrition core classes, Dietetic Internship and other academic course work. Additional courses may be assigned, as needed and as appropriate for candidate’s expertise, by the department. Course descriptions are available at  http://catalog.calpoly.edu/coursesaz/fsn/ 

Duties may also include, but are not limited to: (1) supervision of undergraduate senior projects, (2) graduate student research, (3) student advising and (4) teach and/or be involved administratively in a Master of Professional Studies or certificate program.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Master’s in Nutrition/relevant field plus RD/RDN.

  • Demonstrated three years’ experience as an RD/RDN in clinical, community, or food administration or any practice combination.  

  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings.  

  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.  

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Demonstrated experience in higher education, internship direction or DPD Director is desirable. 

  • Previous experience working with dietetic students, interns or other postgraduate level students is desirable.  

  • PhD in Nutrition/relevant field is desirable. University-level teaching.

  • Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Food Science and Nutrition Department has 12 full-time faculty, numerous part-time faculty, support staff, and approximately 600 students. FSN offers two majors - Nutrition and Food Science. The department hosts a dynamic and innovative Nutrition program that encourages national as well as international perspectives on teaching and research. The Department has strong connection with the stakeholders in California and research programs are developed in partnership with the Central Coast community and food industries along with commodity boards such as strawberry board. The Nutrition curriculum includes two concentrations: Applied Nutrition and Nutrition Science. The Applied Nutrition concentration is accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and our Culinology® program is Research Chefs Association approved. The Department offers a MS in Nutrition, a MS in Food Science and a Dietetic Internship program.
