Pediatric Emergency Medicine - Division Director

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham seeks a nationally recognized, accomplished and visionary leader to continue to advance the clinical, research, and education missions of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. This leader will build on the significant departmental and institutional strengths, commitment to clinical excellence, research innovation, and superb education in a culture of patient and family centered care. The Department of Pediatrics has a rich history of service and scholarship. Today, members of the faculty and their teams are recognized nationally as leaders in clinical care, research, and education. The Department encompasses 19 divisions and includes 250 highly skilled clinicians and investigators. Faculty members have diverse and complementary areas of interest and expertise including health outcomes, and together are dedicated to providing excellence in primary and specialty pediatric care, research, education, and community and global outreach. Research activity has continued to increase; extramural grant awards provided $31 million in total committed annual dollars (including over $18 million from NIH) in FY19. The Department is deeply committed to the education of the next generation of outstanding pediatricians through robust Residency and Fellowship programs (in FY20, 96 residents and 75 fellows). The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine has 30 faculty and 9 fellows. The main site of clinical activity is in the Emergency Department at Children’s of Alabama.

Our goals are to provide the highest quality medical care to children and adolescents; to develop new preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for diseases that impact our patients through basic, clinical and health services research; and to provide outstanding education across the continuum of pediatric medicine. Faculty are also engaged in strong advocacy efforts at the state and national level.

The Department seeks a division director with strong leadership experience and potential for growth. Operational knowledge of pediatric emergency medicine and an ability to work collaboratively with others in the Department of Pediatrics and with leadership at Children’s of Alabama is required. The leader must be able to advance the clinical and academic development of the faculty and to successfully lead and recruit in all three missions: clinical, education, research. The ideal candidate will qualify for an appointment at the Associate or Professor level within UAB and will be an MD, or MD/PhD who is licensed or eligible for license in the state of Alabama. Salary and tenure status are negotiable based on experience and current academic achievements.

The UAB Department of Pediatrics practices at Children’s of Alabama, which is an independent children’s hospital. Children’s of Alabama serves the UAB Pediatric enterprise as the site for clinical care, training and research. COA is a premier children’s hospital that is growing people and programs. COA is ranked among the best children’s hospital programs in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Last year, patients made more than 670,000 outpatient and 15,000 inpatient visits to COA from every county in Alabama and from 41 other states and four foreign countries. There were 74,000 visits to the COA Emergency Room and 10,000 patients were admitted to the hospital from the Emergency Room. COA is the only medical center in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama and is the birthplace of human rights in the United States. It is a diverse community in which UAB is an important economic engine and focus for discovery. The Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 1.2 million and offers outstanding opportunities for education, cultural and outdoor activities and community life.
