Chair, Department of Surgery Albany Medical College is seeking a dynamic physician leader for the position of Chair of the Department of Surgery. S/he should possess an MD or MD/PhD degree, hold board certification and be eligible for licensure in medicine in the state of New York. The selected candidate will be eligible for an appointment as Professor of Surgery and will hold the Henry and Sally Schaffer Endowed Chair. The Chair of the Department of Surgery will also be the Service Chief at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

The only academic health sciences center in northeastern New York, Albany Med is a Level 1 Trauma Center that serves as a tertiary referral center for a 25-county area. It has one of the most extensive general and specialty surgical practices in the Northeast including a long-standing transplant program, renowned vascular team and pediatric surgery; it counts performing the region’s first robotic gastric bypass surgery among its many surgical achievements.

The Chair is responsible for the clinical, education and research missions of the Department of Surgery. Reporting to the Dean of Albany Medical College and the Hospital General Director of Albany Medical Center Hospital, the Chair leads a team of over 95 faculty in nine divisions: General Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, Urology and Urological Surgery, and Vascular Surgery. Additional sub-specialties within the divisions include Ambulatory Surgery, Bariatric/Gastric Bypass Surgery, Breast Surgery, Cancer Care, Cardiac Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Endovascular Surgery, Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Robotic Surgery and Thoracic Surgery.

As the chief surgeon, the Chair manages the delivery of surgical care in the 766-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital and at off-site outpatient clinics. This includes ascertaining that all hospital and clinic operations are conducted in accordance with The Joint Commission and New York State Department of Health guidelines, as well as other applicable accreditation, statutory and regulatory requirements.

The Chair of Surgery is expected to be the academic leader of the department, and as such, fosters the surgical education and research efforts within the College. The Chair also oversees the Department’s graduate medical education programs, which include residencies in General Surgery, Otolaryngology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology and Vascular Surgery, and fellowships in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Surgical Critical Care and Vascular Surgery.
