Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

The Department of Surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital is now accepting applicants for its ABS-recognized, ACGME-approved Surgical Critical Care Fellowship with an emphasis in Clinical Outcomes Research beginning July 1, 2021. This fellowship is appropriate for individuals who have completed at least three years of general surgery training and are interested in obtaining formal training in pediatric surgical critical care medicine. The program will combine a dedicated clinical year focused on the management of surgical patients in the NICU and PICU (in addition to dedicated rotations in adult surgical intensive care units [cardiac, thoracic, trauma, burn, vascular and general] affiliated with our program) with an optional one- to two-year clinical research fellowship at the conclusion of the clinical year. Fellows accepted into the program will be encouraged to focus their research efforts on pediatric surgical diseases.

During the transition from the formal surgical critical care fellowship year to the research training year(s), fellows will be exposed to a dual-mentorship model with a content expert and a clinical research advisor to help in the conceptualization, design, conduct and completion of high quality clinical research projects. The applicant will have the opportunity to develop prospective cohort databases, carry out small clinical trials, and retrospectively review existing local, regional, national and international databases, to mention just a few options. Fellows choosing to pursue the two-year research extension after their one-year surgical critical care fellowship will have the opportunity to obtain formal training in Health Services Research through Harvard’s School of Public Health.
