The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology within The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine seeks a highly qualified, academically focused clinical leader for the position of Founding Academic Chair. The Academic Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology will be broadly responsible for the administration of strategic, academic and clinical initiatives within the department for the University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine and work collaboratively with the Vice Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs.

Preferred Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience within academic departmental leadership or related activities

  • Track record of effective leadership, including experience and success in research, education, and clinical administration
  • Success in building, expanding and elevating programs with vision and collaborative team spirit.
  • Ability to develop and implement new programs.

About the Department:

•Currently there are 12 labor and delivery recovery postpartum beds and two postpartum/antepartum rooms. This number is expected to increase to approximately 18 postpartum/antepartum rooms and a well-baby nursery after an upcoming expansion.

•UT Health Tyler averages 850 births per year.

•The NICU currently has nine beds but will have approx. 16 beds after the expansion.

•Family medicine residents round with pediatric hospitalists in our hospitals.

•Referrals for gynecologic oncology are typically sent to Dallas.

•Maternal-fetal medicine referrals are sent to Dallas as well, or to CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances in Tyler per patient’s request.

Major Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Support and contribute to the mission of the School
  • Recruit, engage, and/or sustain a qualified faculty for the Department as determined by available resources and with advice and consent of the Dean and health system leaders. 
  • Conduct required faculty reviews
  • Provide oversight, in conjunction with the Department of Medical Education leadership, for the educational programs and leaders (e.g., Program Directors, Clerkship Directors, etc.) within the department. 
  • Supporting the faculty counseling and faculty grievance and appeals processes related to mission area
  • Support the faculty throughout their careers as educators, scientists, health care providers and academic leaders
  • Employ a strong understanding of social determinants of health as it related to members of the department and the region’s patient care population.
  • Serving as consultant on issues related to the specialty focus of the Department
  • Providing and administering teaching and education to residents, graduate students, staff and other participants in departmental educational programs through lectures, didactics, and supervision in practicum settings
