University of South Florida and Tampa General Hospital

We are currently accepting applications for our 1-year Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Fellowship training program, start date July 1, 2023.

The University of South Florida (USF) is the fastest-rising university in America over the past decade, public or private, according to U.S. News and World Report (U.S. News) 2022. It ranks 46 of public universities nationwide and for the third consecutive year, USF ranks as one of the nation's top 50 public universities and among the top national Carnegie classification as a Doctoral/Research Extensive institution. The University of South Florida’s Center for Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Program is part of a comprehensive multi-organ transplant institute (e.g., heart, lung, liver, kidney, and pancreas). Our center is one of the largest transplant centers in the United States. In 2021, The Center for Advanced Lung Disease joined the ranks of the highest volume transplant centers in the nation with its 700th adult lung transplant procedure. The first lung transplant at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) was performed in 2002. Tampa General’s lung transplant program has grown and excelled to be named by U.S. News & World Report as a “high performing” hospital for Pulmonology & Lung Surgery for 2021-2022.

The USF/TGH Center for Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant program continues to grow in volume, providing excellent patient exposure and the opportunity to train at Tampa General Hospital, a leading facility in this region. The fellow will work under the direct supervision and guidance of two lung transplant pulmonologists and three advanced lung disease pulmonologists who are known in their field: Interstitial Lung Disease, Pulmonary Hypertension and Cystic Fibrosis.

The fellow will have the unique experience of participating in outpatient evaluation of referrals of end-stage lung disease patients from Florida and surrounding states. The fellow will be involved in the multidisciplinary approach in care of these patients in the state-of-the-art lung transplant ICU in the pre-transplant and in the immediate post-transplant period. The lung transplant team provides care of all adult VV ECMOs. The fellow is primarily responsible to evaluate patients, speak to families and co-ordinate the care with other health-care professionals. Procedures will be supervised by lung transplant pulmonologists and/ or advanced lung disease pulmonologists. Fellow will also receive training in surveillance bronchoscopies, donor call management, assist in procurement of DCD donors, post-transplant care of patients on the inpatient and in the post-transplant clinics. Learning takes place during bedside rounds, didactic conferences, sit down teaching rounds related to the care of patients, and through selfstudy. Our fellows receive a very comprehensive clinical training in lung transplantation and advance lung disease.

Our goals and objectives of the program are to train an exemplary UNOS certified lung transplant pulmonologist per year and foster research activity in the field of lung transplantation. The applicant should be board certified in Internal Medicine and should have completed 3 years of training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
