Overview:
Position Summary:To coordinate the activities in the operating room environment; function as a scrubbed or non-scrubbed assistant before and during the surgical procedures; provide nursing support to the surgical department, assist their respective department and physicians in providing service excellence and quality patient care in multiple settings utilizing a variety of nursing skills and functions.

Responsibilities:
Essential Functions:Checks the operating room for general cleanliness and readiness prior to any procedures. Also wipes down all flat surfaces.Checks all equipment in the OR (lights, suction, oxygen, monitors, etc.) for proper functioning prior to procedures.Arranges the OR for the procedure, including adjusting lights, positioning Mayo stands and stools, etc. Circulator also procures additional equipment as needed.Assists in opening sterile supplies for each procedure.Checks the patients chart in the pre-operative holding area and verifies that it is complete and in order. Makes sure that the consent form matches the scheduled procedure. Interviews the patient after verifying patient identification. Confirms patient NPO status, allergies, procedure to be performed, verifies correct surgical site, and answers any questions that the patient may have. Offers further patient education if needed. Relays significant findings to other staff as well as to the surgeon and anesthesia provider.Assists with transfer of the patient to the OR. Positions and secures the patient on the operating table.Performs timeout procedures with surgical team and documents such.Assists anesthesia provider with intubation of patient as necessary.Completes skin prep as ordered, per department policy and procedure.Helps tie up gowned members of the surgical team, positions furniture and equipment so that it is readily available for use throughout the procedure.Completes the proper sponge, sharps and instrument counts per department policy and procedure.Checks with the surgeon regarding any specific equipment, supply or medication needs.Checks with the scrub technician for any additional equipment of supplies that may be needed. Opens items to the scrub tech utilizing proper sterile technique.Administers IV medicines throughout the procedure as ordered by the physician for conscious sedation cases. Monitors the patient during the procedure per department policy and procedure.Keeps the OR clean and organized during the procedure. Adjusts lights, keeps the surgeon, anesthesia provider and scrub technician supplied with the necessary operative items.Obtains necessary lab reports, medications, and IV solutions as needed throughout the procedure. Is very familiar with the policy and procedure on blood transfusion.Calls for lab, blood bank or pathology assistance or backup as needed and requested by the physician. As the circulating nurse, is in charge of the OR and its functions.Accepts, handles and labels all specimens according to department policy and procedure.Continually observes the movements of the surgical team during the performance of their duties to assure that there is no break in aseptic technique during the procedure. Intervenes and assists when a break in procedure or sterility occurs or is suspected.Completes all paperwork required for the procedure, especially the Intra-operative record. Assures that complete billing is done and that all supplies are properly charged for.Completes, confirms and reports to the Surgeon at the end of the procedure the final count results for sponges, instruments, and sharps.Assists with the transfer of the patient from the OR to the recovery area and gives report to the PACU nurse.Is flexible in working hours. Understands that Overtime is common in the operating room environment. Willing to assist in the PACU if needed.RN must become ACLS certified within one year of employment.Acts as the Team Leader for the Operating rooms as assigned.Assists in daily checks such as the narcotic count, blanket warmer checks, crash cart, medication refrigerator and malignant hyperthermia cart checks as examples.Takes appointed call rotations as scheduled.Performs essential job functions of scrub technician when trained to do so (see CST job description).Supervises all persons in the OR environment, to include: LPNs, CSTs, STs, CMAs, MAs, Radiology Techs, surgical product representatives, students, preceptees, as well as any other person present in the OR environment.Assists with cleaning the Operating Room, including mopping the floor, wiping down surfaces, disposal of trash and waste, instrument cleaning and reprocessing. Able to pick procedure cases.May be asked to make pre and post-op calls to patients per department guidelines.Assists throughout the surgical department as needed with tasks such as, but not limited to:answering the phonescheduling proceduresordering supplies, linen or restocking the area and the OR schecking equipment and arranging supplies as necessarychart review and re-filing as necessaryquality improvement projectsAssists in the pre-op and recovery as needed.Attends required meetings and serves on committees as requested.Participates in professional development activities.Maintains CNOR certification.Prepares for and participates in inservices and orienting staff or students to the OR environment.Other duties as assigned.Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.

Qualifications:
Required:RN graduate of an accredited school of nursingCurrent Washington State RN license required.CPR certification required annually.ACLS certification required within one year of date of hire.Must have at least one year or RN experience.Desired:CNOR preferred
