Department Profile:
The Emergency Department Adult Border Unit (EDABU) has been developed to support the Emergency Department and Inpatient units that admit intermediate level patients. As our health system is challenged with unprecedented capacity and throughput challenges it is imperative that we implement creative initiatives that support our patients requiring inpatient care. The EDABU care team will care for patients, Monday through Friday, that have been admitted and are awaiting an inpatient bed assignment. A team of nurses will deliver exceptional care and ensure an excellent patient experience. Primary responsibilities include; providing nursing care that is inclusive of acting on admission orders, transporting and monitoring of patients, facilitating treatment as ordered/directed, and other duties as assigned. Our team is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.

Job Summary:
As a New Graduate Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while caring for the whole person in a patient-centered atmosphere.
  • Plan, provide and document professional nursing care, utilizing the nursing process, in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures under the supervision of the team leader or charge nurse.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist other healthcare personnel in the delivery of patient care.
  • Participate in maintaining the environment of care including equipment and material resources. Prioritize work organization and identify resources available to assist in completing components of care in a timely manner.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and assist in performance improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

The New Graduate Nurse is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities. Utilizing the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating) in achieving the care goals and health outcomes of the patient and care team. Plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care for patients in guided by DUHS Professional Practice model participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects or other health related projects as assigned. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Adheres to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Work Hours & Shifts:

Start date will be in October 2023
Full Time: 3 - 12 hour shifts - Monday-Friday, Night shift 7p - 7a
Full Time: 3 - 12 hour shifts - Monday-Friday, Day shift 7a - 7p

Knowledge, Skills, Education, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of scope of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and NCA
  • Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process
  • Knowledge of professional theory, practice and procedure
  • Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families
  • Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others
  • Ability to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care
  • Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow-up
  • Ability to use fine motor skills
  • Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life support requirements designated by work area or organization
  • Ability to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status
  • Ability to use computer and learn new software programs
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools
  • Ability to navigate the entity to provide clinical care for patients
  • Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking
  • Ability to remain focused and organized
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients
  • Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions
  • Working knowledge and completion of appropriate JCAHO and other regulatory requirements
  • Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing Required
  • All Registered Nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date

Licensure, Certification or Registration:
  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification preferred (required within 3 months of employment)
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date
