LECTURER/ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR ACADEMIC CARDIOLOGIST (CARDIAC INTENSIVIST)


The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and the Division of Cardiology of the University Health Network (UHN) and Sinai Health System (SHS) are seeking to recruit a qualified full-time Clinical Academic Cardiologist with expertise in cardiovascular-critical care (cardiac intensivist). The successful candidate would fulfil the academic position description of Clinician Teacher (CT) and must be eligible for academic appointment at the minimum rank of Lecturer at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024 or as mutually agreed upon.

The Cardiac Intensivist will be a part of a multi-disciplinary team, and is responsible for a 14-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. They will have completed a minimum of one-year of critical care fellowship. The successful candidate will have subspecialty training in cardiology and fellowship training in critical care and will be able to manage patients with critical and complex illness, taking a patient centered approach. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence and effective ability in interpersonal relationships, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, priority and problem-solving skills, and conflict resolution.

The candidate would have experience in the management of advanced ventilatory support, renal replacement therapy, hemodynamic monitoring, percutaneous mechanical circulatory support devices (Impella, RVAD, LVAD, Protek Duo, and Tandem Heart), advanced heart failure patients, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and heart transplant, as well as overflow post cardiac surgery patients.

The primary goal of this recruitment is to participate and enrich the educational experience in the critical care environment. The successful candidate will participate in the development and delivery of educational programs for medical trainees and interprofessional education in the UHN Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the University of Toronto. The candidate will also oversee medical rotations for undergraduate and postgraduate trainees as well as clinical fellows. Responsibilities will also include providing clinical care in the outpatient settings, teaching, and participation in other scholarly activities. Teaching excellence will be assessed through learner evaluations, teaching awards, and depth and breadth of experiences in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

An educational and clinical focus in equity, inclusion and diversity is important. Expertise in virtual care, remote patient management, use of digital health tools to enable improved access to high quality care, in particular experience in health care delivery through team based care and regional access for cardiogenic shock and chronic disease is a requirement.

The successful candidate will report to the Division Director of Cardiology at UHN/SHS. Candidates must hold an MD degree or equivalent and should have, or be eligible for, certification in Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). The primary language of work will be English. Compensation will depend on the amount of clinical work performed, (estimated based on fee for service billing) but will be in the usual range for an experienced academic Cardiologist in the Province of Ontario, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Additional sources of income from Alternate Funding Plans (AFPs) and merit awards from the Department of Medicine may be available. Health benefit options and plans are supplied per institutional policy. In addition, the candidate may be reimbursed partial start-up costs for office expenses.
