Responsibilities:
Responsible for assembly and delivery of instrumentation/equipment critical to surgical intervention. Responsible for unit wide procedure coordination for identified specialties. Coordinates resources anticipated throughout the intra-operative course. Serves as a resource to team members. The Surgical Technician is responsible for providing patient care to patients of all ages (neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric). Embraces shared governance nursing organizational principles by being aware of nursing council activities so that outcome, goals and objectives of nursing are achieved. All Surgical Technicians: basic competency development in general surgical
procedures Clinical focus in specialty areas include:

General, General-Vascular, Gynecologic, Urology

Ortho, Neuro, Ophtholmology, ENT, Plastic, Max.-Facial

Cardiac Thoracic, Open Heart

Laser and Orthopedic In addition, the Laser and Orthopedic Surgical Technicians are responsible for
the coordination of complex procedures department wide which include: Laser: accountable for the operation of all lasers in the surgical service areas. Responsible for coordinating (and troubleshooting during laser operations), preventive maintenance scheduling ensuring that applicable instrumentation is available for laser operation and all safety measures are followed. Orthopedic: Coordinates instrumentation and equipment for complex orthopedic
procedures. Procures instrumentation from manufacturer, vendor, or multiple
sites to ensure availability during procedures (as scheduled by MD). Orientation as assigned by educator/team coordinator as well as inservice coordination for surgical team is required. The provision of nursing care will be provided in an environment that embraces
maximum participation by the staff.

Qualifications:
EducationSuccessful completion of a 3-6 month on-the-job orientation program. Graduate of an approved surgical technology course. Surgical Technologists (AST) in order to maintain their certification. This requirement would also apply to technicians "grandfathered" in the certified level, who must complete 60 CEUs every four (4) years in their field of practice to maintain the grandfathered certification status.Licensure/CertificationSurgical Techs must be certified or eligible for national certification in surgical technology. All certified scrub technicians must complete the certifying requirements as outlined by the Association of Surgical Technologists. BLS required or obtain within probationary period (first 90 days).ExperienceO.R. experience preferred but not required.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesAcquires and shares knowledge of current trends in surgical technology through active participation in hospital and suite educational activities. Seeks continued learning opportunities that will enhance patient care. Demonstrates ability to be a perceptive listener. Able to hear and interpret muffled voices through surgical masks. Recognizes and sets priorities appropriate to individual patient care needs. Able to read and interpret medication labels, equipment instructions and preference cards. Substantial level of interpersonal skills required in order to interact with healthcare team, salesmen, customers, to accept and respond to constructive criticism, etc. Substantial level of analytical ability required in order to read and interpret medication labels, equipment instructions, preference cards, etc. Moderate level of physical effort required for 80% of time in order to lift and turn patients, recurrent standing and walking, pass and/or retract instruments, thread suture through needle, etc. Substantial level of mental/visual ability required for 80% of time in order to anticipate needs of surgeon, monitor equipment, etc.Physical DemandsStanding for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours). Walking for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours) to include moving about the work area, hospital and/or campus as needed. Sitting for extended periods (8 to 12 hours). Must be able to bend, stoop and reach/lift above your head. Sight: must be able to read documentation in a variety of formats such as items in print or electronically. For Health Care Providers (HCP) must be able to visualize patient condition and see data displayed on monitoring devices, etc. Auditory: must be able to hear in order to clearly communicate with others and use communication devices such as telephones, must be able to hear patients, alarms, call bells, etc. Tactile: must have ability to handle equipment and/or devices related to job duties, enter documentation within computer system. For HCP must be able to feel for pulses, skin temperature, and other patient conditions. Olfactory: HCP need to be able to smell disease-specific smells. HCP should not manually lift (including transfer, reposition, or move) patients who weigh greater than 35 pounds. The appropriate safe patient handling device will be used, except in emergency situations (life or death situations where delay in obtaining and using the safe patient handling equipment may be detrimental to the patient). Refer to Policy/Procedure G-89. Proper body mechanics will be used when moving or lifting any equipment or supplies.
