NYC Health +Hospitals Harlem Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Harlem is the largest hospital in the area, capable of treating the most seriously ill. Harlem provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, dentistry and oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment.

The Assistant Director of Nursing is an integral member of Nursing Services Administration. Under the supervision of the Deputy Director/Associate Director of Nursing or a designee, the incumbent assumes administrative responsibilities and clinical oversight for Patient Care Services. The incumbent responsibilities are carried out within the framework of the Hospital By-Laws, the Mission and Vision statements, policies and procedures, all regulatory (JCAHO, NYSDOH, NYCDOAH and professional organizational standards.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1.Promotes a positive and pleasant attitude conducive to the workplace, which promotes customer service and enhances and furthers the hospital's Mission, Vision and Value statement.

2.Patient Care Management/Unit Operations:

Collaborates with the Associate Director of Nursing in planning and developing programs to improve patient care and employee performance.
Periodically monitors employee's performance relative to patient care and nursing practice, e.g. compliance to policy/procedures relative to patient care assignments and the related documentation, narcotic count, code cart assessment sheet, medication administration and documentation, etc.
Communicates patient care and service related problems on the tour to appropriate individuals timely. Assists in corrective actions/follow-up.
Makes frequent, purposeful rounds with/without Nurse Managers of service to assess units.
Evaluates staffing plan and ensures that staffing is adequate to meet patient care needs.
3.Collaborates with peers and Nurse Managers in developing mechanisms that improves continuous feedback relative to the current status of patient care/nursing practice issues in order to comply with hospital policy/procedure, regulatory agency mandates and standards.

4.Meets frequently with peers (nursing leaders/personnel) in order to:

Maintain open channels of communication.
Explore resolutions to problems.
Review/analyze quality improvement reports and effectiveness of corrective action plans/follow-up.
Periodically assess/revies the master staffing plan.
Review customer service/patient satisfaction patterns.
