OU Physicians is Oklahoma's largest physician group and encompasses almost every adult and child specialty.

This position is located at the Stephenson Cancer Center in the Multidisciplinary Clinic.

POSITION INFORMATION: Works under general supervision of a physician or other medical personnel with results being reviewed for compliance with protocols, policies, and procedures. Recommends improvements or modifications to teaching and nursing practices. May assume a lead role to ensure policies, procedures, protocols, and physician's orders are followed.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
  1. Physician Assistance. Assists physician during the patient examination as needed. Ensures all information is available to the physician. May accompany physician on rounds and keeps informed of special orders concerning the patient.
  2. Patient Preparation. Prepares patient for examination by having the patients charts ready for the physician.
  3. Sample Collection. Collects samples from patients including but not limited to blood, urine, and tissue. Prepares samples for analysis or shipment.
  4. Information Gathering. Takes various readings such as heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, weight, body temperature and records results.
  5. Data Collection. Collects all laboratory reports, data, radiologic studies, and pertinent records.
  6. Medication Administration. Under direction of the physician or other medical personnel, order or prescribe, administer medications, and other oncology treatments.
  7. Patient Assessment. Assesses and monitors patient response to procedures and treatments. Reports patient condition and reaction to tests, drugs, treatments, and any significant incidents to the physician.
  8. Sedation. May assist with conscious sedation of patients as required by facility and administer local anesthetic.
  9. Collaboration. Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to provide efficient quality patient care. May serve as a functional leader or a direct supervisor of staff such as LPN's, MA's, or other clinic staff.
  10. Counseling. Counsels patients, family, and/or caregiver about side effects of medication, therapy, applicable referrals, and bereavement counseling.
  11. Patient Follow Up. Sets up patient appointments or follows up on patient appointments and patient referrals.
  12. Emergency Response. Responds to and intervenes in emergency situations to include but not limited to anaphylaxis, hypoglycemia, hypotension, hemorrhage, respiratory distress.
  13. Policies and Procedures. Follows established departmental, University, federal and state procedures and safety, environmental and/or infection control standards.
  14. As Needed. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.


Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

Certifications / Licenses: Current State of Oklahoma Registered Nurse Licensure to be obtained within 90 days of employment in this position, Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR certifications

Equivalency / Substitution: Will accept an Associate's Degree in Nursing and 24 months related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's Degree

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Knowledge of supportive care principles and techniques for oncology patients.
  • Knowledge of bereavement counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of oncology treatment procedures, facilities, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of treatments of Oncological diseases and reactions and side effects of related therapy methods.
  • Ability to obtain Organizational Chemotherapy Bio-therapy training within 12-18 months of hire date.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Ability to perform nursing assessments, patient triage, and referrals.
  • Ability to educate patients, families, and/or caregivers as to the nature of the disease and to provide instructions on proper care and treatment.
  • Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.
  • Ability to multitasks
