Job Description
BASIC FUNCTION:

OB RN's must be able to effectively triage, treat, and care for pregnant patients. They will be responsible for caring for pregnant patients in the Emergency room setting, on ambulance transfers, in the outpatient setting, in the OR, as well as inpatient in the OB Unit. They must be able to care for the patient in the antenatal period, the intrapartum period, and the postpartum period both in the inpatient and outpatient ettings. They will also be responsible for the care of the newborn patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

SHIFT DAYS/HOURS:

Days: 6 am - 6 pm, Nights: 6 pm - 6 am, days dependent upon individual schedule. On-call requirements. Subject to change based on business necessity.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Must hold a valid diploma or degree from an Accredited School of Nursing and maintain a valid RN license in the State of Kansas.

Experience: Must have least one year of OB experience

Certificates, License, Registrations: Valid RN license in the State of Kansas; Must maintain current certifications in BLS, ACLS, NRP, and STABLE

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have comprehensive, current knowledge of nursing theory and practice and must be able to apply this knowledge in various situations, ranging from routine to emergent during the care of for the patient while working within their scope of practice as outlined by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Must also possess the ability to communicate with persons of various backgrounds in a tactful, courteous manner. Maintain compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality.

Physical: Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds occasionally or 10 to 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Supervision Received: Director of Nursing, Maternal/Child Care Nurse Manager, In-Patient Nurse Managers, Shift Charge Nurse

Supervision Exercised: Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Unit Secretary, other assistive

personnel assigned to the OB unit

Other: Patients, families, visitors, other hospital personnel, medical staff, other medical

facility personnel, community program personnel, mortuary personnel, EMS

personnel, members of the general public

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:

To reduce job hazards, this position is responsible for wearing PPE during job functions. PPE can include: gloves, gown/coat, shoe covers, head/face, eye and ear protection. Each job function requires a different level of PPE, individuals receive initial and annual training to identify the appropriate level of PPE required

This position is classified Class I by OSHA and is exposed to odors, infectious microorganisms, and bodily fluids.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Including but not limited to: Electronic fetal monitoring, electronic health record,, vital signs monitor, IV pumps, Epidural pumps, birthing ball, IV fluid warmer, compression stockings, Standing scales, telemetry devices, oxygen therapy products, Algo Hearing screener, phototherapy/bilirubin monitoring equipment, Neopuff, Isolette, radiant warmer, general office equipment, PYXIS, zoll AED, bladder scanner, suction units, glucometer, breast pumps, infant scales, and other patient monitoring devices.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Delivers care to patients utilizing the nursing process by demonstrating the appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's care as evidenced by patient/staff observation.

2. Provides nursing care to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and nursery patients including but not limited to education, labor support, and breastfeeding support.

3. Communicates aspects of nursing plan of care using SBAR. Including; assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and revision to appropriate staff including other nursing personnel, medical staff, and ancillary departments as needed.

4. Demonstrates proficiency in procedures and related interventions specific to the OB unit including, but not limited to, sterile vaginal exams, external fetal monitoring, various sterile field set ups, epidural pump maintenance, scalp electrode, IUPC, cervical dilator balloon, breastfeeding, pumping, fundal checks, newborn feeding, circumcision care, and newborn hearing screening.

5. Documents all care and assessments accurately, completely and efficiently in EHR. Accurately completes all forms and consents..

6. Develop, implement, regularly evaluate, and revise the nursing plan of care via EHR as needed.

7. Provides appropriate teaching/coaching, including but not limited to labor and delivery, post partum, mother/baby teaching, breastfeeding, circumcision care, and post operative care.

8. Knowledgeable and alert to possible complications and changes in the patient condition. Reports unusual or pertinent assessment finding to the primary care physician.

9. Carries out physician's orders, accurately orders and processes orders within EHR. .

10. Administers and appropriately documents within EHR prescribed medications and treatments following HCH policies and procedures and in accordance with KSBN guidelines

11. Enhances self-knowledge of drug therapy and therapeutics by actively participating in staff development programs and other education programs such as antibiotic stewardship.

12. Collaborates with social services and other health care team members in providing individualized patient care while developing and implementing discharge planning.

13. Appropriately schedules inductions, NSTs, and outpatients in EHR., .

14. Performs outpatient NST's and evaluation of labor on both a scheduled and as needed basis.

15. Displays proficiency in use of equipment related to the OB unit. Monitors, recognizes, and appropriately reports equipment failure.

16. Completes the OB Nurse Duties Task list (both daily and monthly tasks.)

17. Follows all OB Policies and Procedures as outlined in Obstetric policy books.

18. Assists with orientation of new OB employees.

19. Participates in educational activities for the department as well as participates in ongoing surveillance and education of infection prevention practices and protocols.

20. Other duties as assigned.
