VA New England Healthcare System is an integrated, comprehensive health care system comprised of eight medical centers and over 35 Community Based Outpatient Clinics in the six New England states

The VA New England Healthcare System (NEHS) is an integrated, comprehensive health care system comprised of eight medical centers located in the six New England states: Togus, Maine; Manchester, New Hampshire; White River Junction, Vermont; Providence, Rhode Island; VA Connecticut HCS (West Haven and Newington campuses); and Bedford, Boston (Brockton, Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury campuses); and Northampton, Massachusetts.  In addition, there are over 35 Community Based Outpatient Clinics throughout VA NEHS. 

New England is a large geographic area that spans the full spectrum of socioeconomic conditions from dense, urban centers to sparsely populated rural areas. The primary mission of VA NEHS is to provide quality health care and related services to eligible veterans in New England.

Comprehensive care offered by VA NEHS includes primary care, acute medical and surgical care, psychiatric care, long-term care, nursing home care and ambulatory surgery and offer the full range of health care services from basic outpatient care to open heart surgery, radiation therapy, and kidney transplantation.

VA NEHS covers an area with a total veteran population of approximately 1.3 million.  VISN 1 employs approximately 10,000 staff.  In addition, numerous clinical and administrative trainees assist them in providing care and services.  Annually VA NEHS treats more than 240,000 veterans.   Each year approximately 2.5 million outpatient visits occur at Medical Centers and community based outpatient clinics throughout the VA New England Healthcare System.

Our medical centers are affiliated with some of the nation's most respected academic medical centers. VA NEHS researchers have made numerous major contributions to medical science. Total research funding awarded to VA NEHS investigators is among the highest in VA. 

Authorized Beds

There are 1084 inpatient beds for acute medical/surgical and mental health, 731 nursing home care beds, and 110 domiciliary beds.

Special Programs

NEHS offers many special programs such as Blind Rehabilitation, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Seriously Mentally Ill, Spinal Cord Injury and Substance Abuse.

Clinical Programs of Excellence

Eight programs in the VA New England Healthcare System are 2002 VA Clinical Programs of Excellence. These programs received national recognition for clinical programs that exemplify the best of VA care and stand as world-class leaders in their fields. The programs of excellence are: Cardiac Surgery: VA Boston Healthcare System, West Roxbury campus. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: National Center for PTSD at VA Boston HCS. Renal Dialysis: VA Connecticut Healthcare System, West Haven campus. Seriously Mentally Ill: Errera Community Care Center at VA Connecticut Healthcare System. Seriously Mentally Ill: Mental Health Intensive Care Management (MHICM) program at Bedford VA Medical Center. Seriously Mentally Ill: Community Support Program at VA Boston Healthcare System, Brockton campus. Women Veterans: VA Boston Healthcare System. Substance Abuse: VA Boston Healthcare System.
